History

The Institute was founded in 1963 by the University of Zagreb and the Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of Croatia as the Africa Research Institute.

In 1971 the Institute changed its name to the Institute for Developing Countries and its research expended to all developing countries.

In 1989 the Institute changed its name again to the Institute for Development and International Relations (IRMO) expanding its activities on macroeconomic policy, transitional dynamics and sustainable development, resource economics and environmental policy, as well as the European integration processes.

In 1996 the Institute was organized as a public research institution under the name the Institute for International Relations (IMO) signifying its interdisciplinary focus and dedication to the issues of global social and policy importance for international politics.
